Jordan Newhouse, Piano, Voice
B.A., Nebraska Wesleyan University
Jordan Newhouse is an Omaha native who has recently joined the teaching team at SNJ Studio of Music. After graduating from Millard North, he earned his B.M. in Piano Performance at Wheaton College (IL) and began working as a professional musician throughout the Chicago-land area. Most of his jobs revolved around church music but he maintained a regular schedule of collaborative work with singers as both a vocal coach and an accompanist. While Jordan studied classical music and focused on operatic coaching, he is a frequent performer and coach in musical theater settings. After ten years in Chicago-land, Jordan came back home to Omaha and is currently the staff pianist at Millard West High School where he also directs the show choir bands. Jordan’s musical influences are pretty varied (pop, bluegrass, jazz, R&B, Christian, etc) but he cannot lie… His true love is classical music! He has grown into a love for opera and choral music over the years and takes every opportunity to share that music with anyone eager to listen and learn. As a teacher, Jordan seeks to meet the student where he/she is. Each of us learns differently and relates to music in unique ways; that means his teaching takes a new form/approach with each student. While each lesson may be unique, there are a few pillars that each student will be focusing on. First, technique is crucial to an enjoyable and long-lasting life with music preventing injury and bad habits. Second, theory (sight-reading, ear-training, theory analysis, etc.) is a major part of what makes music music. And last but most importantly, the student must begin to expand his/her understanding of what music can be, if that means exploring new genres or accessing emotion within a song. The more they fall in love with music, the easier it will be to practice, come to lessons, and maintain their skills into their adult life.
