Karina Brazas, soprano, holds degrees in vocal performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (M.M. 2012) and Washington State University (B.M. 2009). As a vocal instructor, Karina has experience at the middle school, high school, and collegiate level in styles varying from classical, musical theatre, pop, and jazz. Karina’s students are frequently in the top show choirs at their school, and she has had multiple students named best soloist and performer. In addition to her position at SNJ Studios, Karina is also on faculty at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
As a performer, Karina maintains an active and busy schedule as an opera singer. Recent performances include Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Union Avenue Opera in Saint Louis, the Young Pilgrim in Opera Omaha’s workshop preview for the world premiere of Stranger in Paradise, Kitty Hart in Dead Man Walking and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, both with Central City Opera. Karina has also performed as a featured soloist with Orchestra Seattle, the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra, the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, the Coeur d’Alene Symphony, and the Washington-Idaho Symphony.
Upcoming projects include Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica, and a recital and masterclass at her alma mater. Karina has been a recipient of awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions four times, including as a regional finalist in 2014. Karina loves being on faculty at SNJ. When she isn’t singing and teaching, her hobbies include reading, baking, working out, and cuddling her husband, Jeff, and dog, Wally.
