Katherine (Kathy) M. Huerta-Simpson has just recently retired after 35 years of teaching Music Education. She began her teaching career in 1980 at Creighton, NE and subsequently taught instrumental and vocal music at various schools throughout the state. Her final twelve years were here in Omaha, NE at Millard West High School where she served as the Director of Vocal Activities. She has appeared throughout the west-central region and locally as a guest clinician, adjudicator and choreographer and spent many summers as an actor/choreographer in regional theater. A charter inductee to the Chadron State College Music Hall of Fame, her alma mater, she received her MA degree from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She is active in the Nebraska Music Educators Association, which honored her this past fall for 35 years of service to Music Education. Mrs. Simpson has directed and choreographed many high school and summer stock semi-professional musicals. Under her direction, HAIRSPRAY, earned three awards from the Nebraska High School Theater Awards through Omaha Performing Arts; the production received Best Actress, Best Ensemble, and the Outstanding Performance Award. In addition to teaching vocal music, and directing outstanding Concert Choirs, Mrs. Simpson was known for her award winning show choirs. Other honors which Mrs. Simpson has received have been: Outstanding Hispanic Leader, Gold Award, Founders Award and the Making a Difference Award.
